Laser Liposuction – Is It Right For You? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Cynthia Salter-Lewis, MD

The medical cosmetic industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the last ten years.  New injectables and lasers are often introduced in order to give the patients more nonsurgical options.  In some instances, technology has advanced so fast that breakthroughs are being made in the cosmetic industry at an unprecedented pace.

Laser Liposuction happens to be one of those breakthroughs that leave you in awe.  How could a laser take away or melt fat?  Well, the technology is here and it works.   How does it work and who does it work for?  Is It Right For You?

There are a few devices that are now available and FDA approved for laser liposuction.  Smartlipo is the prototype and the first FDA approved device of its kind.  It permanently reduces fat and tightens skin.  Smartlipo can be used on virtually all areas including the belly, love handles, thighs, hips, knees, arms, back, neck and male breast. Unlike traditional liposuction, the procedure is minimally invasive.  This is one reason why people prefer it to traditional liposuction.  Smartlipo uses a very fine probe that is directly inserted into the fat to be removed.  The laser beam then methodically and evenly melts and liquefies the fat.  The added benefit of the laser is that it also triggers collagen remodeling resulting in tighter and firmer skin.  Traditional liposuction only removes fat and does not have the ability to tighten skin.

Is it Right For You?

Male and female are both curious about the procedure.  The first question usually addressed during a consult is – “Are You A Candidate” for such a procedure.  So here are some things to consider:
  • Both women and men are great candidates for laser liposuction
  • You don’t have to be at your ideal body weight.  In fact, most people aren’t
  • Used primarily to treat areas resistant to exercise and dieting.  However, certain techniques and devices may be used in overweight individuals depending on the goal of the fat reduction and the experience of the physician
  • Most patients are healthy or have minor medical problems
  • It is a great option for people with a busy lifestyle and very little downtime to spare.  Laser liposuction offers only 2 days of downtime.
  • If you need to tighten skin post pregnancy.  Laser liposuction provides fat reduction and skin tighten that improves c-section scars
  • Laser liposuction is great for “batwing” arms that make it difficult to fit into clothing.  Traditional liposuction does not have the benefit of skin tightening once the fat is removed
  • Consider the areas that need to be treated.  Laser liposuction is very effective for the belly, love handles, thighs, hips, knees, arms, back, neck and male breast
  • Do you have a fear of general anesthesia?  Laser Liposuction uses only local anesthesia
  • Do you have an event to attend in which you need to see results quickly.  Laser liposuction provides significant results in one week and improves even more with time.

Many women and men want to feel better about themselves and their bodies.  While traditional liposuction and tummy tuck may offer good results, some individuals don’t have the luxury of the significant downtime, swelling and bruising that are associated with these procedures.  Because there is no need for general anesthesia, laser liposuction is significantly safer.  So, there is no need to feel uncomfortable with yourself.  This procedure has revolutionized the medical cosmetic industry and has changed the way people view liposuction.  Consult with a doctor and see if laser liposuction is right for you.  The results are amazing.
